Leyland Daf truckThe T&G's Road transport (commercial) trade group covers 80,000 lorry and van drivers, together with warehouse staff and other back-up employees and accounts for more than a third of total Transport sector membership. Overall, some 140,000 T&G members work in transportation, so get involved with the union that fights back for workers in transport/logistics to give it its modern name.

The RTC, as it is universally known, organises across all areas of the industry. As well as warehouse and support, the T&G is active in all aspects of road transport/logistics, in the milk industry, from collection, through processing towards delivery, Unigate, St. Ivel, Co-op Milk and Express Dairies are key companies where the T&G is organised. Famous names like Excel Logistics, Reality and TNT, Wincanton are all liveries driven by RTC T&G members. In addition, the parcels sector is another growing force which has seen a significant advance in membership in recent years and the RTC trade group also covers all other groups of drivers and logistic workers in general haulage (hire and reward), in chemical and oil, petrol distribution, car collection and heavy haulage. The T&G is the transport workers union!

Where we organise

The T&G organises across the whole of the transport/logistics sector, if you drive then you should join! A snapshot of some companies the T&G organises in include DHL, Christian Salvesen, Kuehne + Nagel, NYK Logistics, Fedex, through whole sectors in transport, parcels, UPS, TNT, Geopost/ Parceline, in waste disposal, Cleanaway, Biffa Waste, Onyx (Veolia), car collection and distribution in 52 companies with minimum standards established , security deliveries, Securitas as well as NFT Distribution, construction distribution, Blue Circle, retail distribution, Tesco, Morrisons, HDNC and a whole host of other companies. Big and small we serve them all!

Why we organise

The T&G is at the forefront of fighting back for members in road transport. Key issues facing members in the road transport sector include:

  • Working Time Directive: average of a 48-hour working week with no loss of earnings. Good minimum standards to be established including good pension schemes and sickness schemes.
  • £10.72 per hour minimum for all lorry drivers
  • Good health and safety standards (Corporate killing legislation)
  • Shortage of labour and skills
  • Drivers' facilities: overnight accommodation, proper washing and toilet facilities, and so on
  • Vocational training for all
  • Effective enforcement of all LGV regulations
  • Full industry consultation involving the Road Haulage Association, the Freight Transport Association and the T&G

RTC campaigns

The T&G actively supports members on a day to day basis and also focuses on specific campaigns of interest to RTC members. Some of our current campaigns include:

Hire and Reward Conference 2006

The 2006 Hire and Reward Conference was held at Transport House, London in September 2006. RTC members came together to agree the minimum standards for transport workers for the coming year. Find out more about the Hire and Reward Conference 2006.
